AKURE – Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (BTO), the lawmaker representing Akoko North East/North West federal constituency has stressed the need to ensure youth participations and accountability at all levels in order to make governance work and fight insecurity in Nigeria.
BTO who was the guest speaker at an event organised by the Akure station of the Nigeria Television Authority network.
The lecture titled; ‘Good governance in the face of corruption and insecurity: The imperatives of youths involvements’.
He started the lecture by saying “instead of using political office to change peoples lives, it has been become ‘the government of the few, by the few and for the few’ because of pressure from the powerful few but we are changing this narrative in order to turn the lives of the people of my constituency around.
Tunji-Ojo said the current state of insecurity in Nigeria was one of the bye products of corruption.
“I am less bothered about the Nigeria of today but about more concerned about the Nigeria of tomorrow. if we don’t sit tight, I fear for Nigeria”.
He said Nigeria’s major investments are fast turning into liabilities because the country is not making use of its vast human capital.
Nigerians need to do a lot make governance work unless, what’s currently ongoing is a child play.
Many politicians are already talking about 2023. We need to sustain a country before we can have 2023 elections. We need to deal with what’s going on firsthand.
He said Nigeria’s population is growing faster than the rate of job creation.
“Nigeria’s per capital income is $1,960 annually according to the World Bank. There’s poverty everywhere as some families don’t even make one million naira in a whole year.
“You can’t divorce insecurity from poverty. We can stop insecurity through job creation and education.
“There’s a lot of pressure on the government and it must rise up to the challenge.
We must strive to put in place structures that would enhance massive youth participation.
He also emphasize the need for youth who are in power to create good impressions that would encourage our leaders to give more youth opportunities to participate and influence change in our political space.
On effective representation, he said he has been able to attract projects to Akokoland. He described himself as a good lobist.
BTO said government at large has lost touch with the people that they no longer trust the government.
“The vacuum between the government and the people most especially young people should be bridged as one of the ways of fighting insecurity in Nigeria.
He described youth as catalysts that could be used to reduce corruption and enhance good governance in Nigeria.
Earlier, Segun Ojelade, the general manager of NTA Akure said the lecture was put together to birth ideas for national development.
“At this very critical point of where we’ve found ourselves as Nigerians, we have to rally round to seek ideas and mobilize ourselves to save our country. Dialogue is very crucial.
“Also, we have not been running the way we should but we’re poised to do more. We have put this together to honour few of those who has been supporting us to work.
He emphasized that NTA Akure need more help to be functional and in serving the state much better.
The chairman of the event, Bode Ayorinde in his opening remark, he said the title of the lecture was a contemporary issue in Nigeria that should attract the interest of all.
He expressed optimism in the capacity of the Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to deliver recommendations that will help the nation to move forward in fighting corruption and insecurity.
BTO was honoured with an award of ‘credible leadership’ at the event.
Other awardees include the wife of the governor of Ondo State, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu (Heart of Gold Award); Dr. Bode Ayorinde (Pillar of Education & Youth Award); Engr. Ife Oyedele (Excellence Award in Community Service); Oba Fredrick Akinruntan (Prestigious Royalty Award); Princess Oladunni Odu (Trailblazer Award); Mr Akin Akingbesote (Excellence Award in Hospitality) and Mr Kunle Ayoade (Most Outstanding Resourceful Entrepreneur Award).
