The Supreme Court has declared Godswill Akpabio, former minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Akwa Ibom’s northwest senatorial district.

The former governor resigned from his ministerial appointment last year to join the race for the party’s presidential ticket but dropped his bid for Bola Ahmed Tinubu who later won the party’s presidential ticket.

Akpabio after dropping his presidential ambition had declared to run for senate in Akwa-Ibom northwest senatorial district.

But just before the APC presidential primary, Udom Ekpoudom, former deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), had won the APC primary for Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial district.

Not satisfied by the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Akpabio approached the court.

In September 2022, a federal high court in Abuja ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept and publish the name of Godswill Akpabio as the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Akwa-Ibom north-west.
