Chimaroke Nnamani, senator representing Enugu east, who lost his re-election bid on Saturday, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Nnamani had lost to Kelvin Chukwu, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the Enugu east senatorial district.

In the buildup to the election, the former governor of Enugu had been involved in a political clash with the leadership of the PDP.

Mr Nnamani was expelled over anti-party activities—for supporting the then-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and now the president-elect, Bola Tinubu.

In a statement on Monday, the former governor said after consultations with his constituents and associates, they supported his decision to quit the PDP.

He said he has moved on and hopes that his “modest contributions” to the development of his constituency would be the building blocks for his successor.

Nnamani added that he “will continue to partner with Tinubu”.

“A Tinubu administration will promote good governance, rule of law and human rights for the interest of all Nigerians,” he said.

He thanked Nigerians, “especially the Ebeano political family”, and urged them to remain steadfast in the years ahead.
