The new service chiefs recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are currently being screened for confirmation by the House of Representatives.
The nominees include Hassan Abubakar, chief of air staff; Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff; Taoreed Lagbaja, chief of army staff and Emmanuel Ogalla, chief of naval staff.
The screening of the service chiefs is being conducted by the principal officers of the house, led by Julius Ihonvbere, the majority leader of the house.
Last week, Tinubu sought the confirmation of the security chiefs in a letter to the upper and lower chambers of the National Assembly.
The President’s request is in line with the provision of section 18(1) of the armed forces act, CAP A20 laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Tinubu had said the review of the nation’s defence architecture necessitated the “appointment of new leaders to work in synergy with one another to achieve the level of optimal performance expected of the military”.
During the screening on Monday in Abuja, the lawmakers gave the nominees were given a few minutes to introduce themselves and make short remarks.
Chief of army staff nominee, Lagbaja, said he will work in collaboration with other security chiefs to ensure security in the country.
According to him, he said is mindful of the nation’s security challenges and will work to transform the army into a well-trained, proactive force.
“I shall do my best to justify the confidence reposed in me by the president,” he said.
The screening has now gone into an executive session.
Last Thursday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of the service chiefs.
