Abuja, Nigeria
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, says sit-at-home orders in the south-east geo-political zone are “becoming ineffective”.
The NSA disclosed this when he made a presentation on security achievements of the President Bola Tinubu administration, at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national summit on Thursday in Abuja.
According to Ribadu, the Tinubu-led administration inherited five major security crises across the country.
He identified the main security challenges across different regions of the country: Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, armed banditry in the North-West, secessionist movements led by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the South-East, unrest in the Niger Delta, and communal clashes and herder-farmer conflicts in the North-Central.
He said his office coordinated efforts by security agencies, which have significantly curbed mass killings, kidnappings, and widespread destruction caused by criminal groups nationwide.
He added that in the last two years, over 13,543 Boko Haram fighters have been neutralised, and more than 11,000 weapons have been recovered and destroyed. Additionally, since the beginning of President Tinubu’s administration, 124,408 Boko Haram combatants and their family members have surrendered to security forces.
Despite some challenges, Ribadu noted that military operations continue in critical areas such as the Tumbuktu Triangle, the Tumbu islands, and other insurgent strongholds.
“In the south-east, a welcome development is that the sit-at-home orders are becoming more and more ineffective,” he said.
“Key IPOB/ESN figures captured or neutralised. Over 50 police stations and many police posts have been rebuilt.
“Attacks on security forces have significantly reduced. Social and economic activities are normalising.
“In north-west, a watershed year in the fight against banditry, 11,250 hostages freed; a decline in mass abductions.
“Decisive blows to top warlords… Ali Kachalla, Boderi, Halilu Sububu, Dangote, Isuhu Yellow, Damuna etc were eliminated.”
