Edo, Ondo polls: IGP orders nationwide clamp down on illegal firearms possession

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu has ordered a fresh nationwide clamp down on illegal firearms possession by individuals ahead of the Edo and Ondo gubernatorial elections.

Mr. Adamu has ordered Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to begin immediate actions to identify, isolate, disarm, arrest and prosecute any individual, groups in possession of prohibited firearms.

This was made known in a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Frank Mba.

He explained that this has become necessary as part of the effort of the Police High Command to curb the trafficking of firearms and other criminal elements that politicians are alleged to be storing up to use during the forthcoming elections in the two states.

Mr. Mba added that the order is targeted at addressing the proliferation and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms in the country which is contrary to the provisions of Chapter F.28 LFN 2004 of the Firearms Act.

” Commissioners of Police in all the states of the federation and the FCT have been directed to immediately convene an enlightenment meeting of all vigilante groups and quasi security outfits spread across the country in order to ensure that their activities are in conformity with the extant laws guiding their establishment and operations.” He stated.

The IGP further enjoined citizens to cooperate with the police in the enforcement of law and order before and after the election as it is aimed at ensuring the safety of lives and property in the country.
