ABUJA – The Conference of State Youth Parliament Speakers in Nigeria, CSYPSN, has berated the Director General of the Nigerian Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, over a comment made on the Sunrise Daily on Channels Television that youth corps members are part of national defense policy of Nigeria and can be mobilized for war if need be.
This was contained in a statement issued by the CSYPSN chairman, Toba Fatunla and made available to journalists.
It was gathered that the House of Representatives, through a bill sponsored by one of its members representi upng Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers state, Awaji-Inimbel Abante, proposed to repeal the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC Act, due to insecurity, banditry, and kidnapping.
Meanwhile, reacting to Ibrahim’s comment, Fatunla condemned the position, redirecting the NYSC boss to the reasons behind the conceptualization of the initiative, noting that the essence of NYSC is not to truncate the efforts of youths who are sacrificing all in serving their fatherland.
“It was stated among other things that NYSC will be an avenue for reconciliation, reconstruction and rebuilding of the nation. It is for national integration and not for the innocent untrained Nigerian Youths to be used for any war.
“If the military is in short supply of personnel, it should please immediately recruit willing and ready youths for that purpose, not the youths that are giving their all is serving their father land.
