Ernest Shonekan, former head of the interim national government overthrown by General Sani Abacha, is dead.

Shonekan died in Lagos on Tuesday at 85.

Mr Shonekan, on May 9, 1936, was a British-trained lawyer and industrialist, hailed from Ogun State.

The late national leader was head of the interim government after Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, former head of state said he stepped aside from office.

Mr Babangida before he announced his “stepping aside” refused to hand over power to MKO Abiola, the assumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election.

Mr Shonekan was in charge of the national government for only three months as he was overthrown through a coup by the late Sani Abacha, former military ruler of Nigeria.

He attended C.M.S grammar school and Igbobi College, Lagos, and obtained a law degree from the University of London.
