The United Kingdom court has found Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president, guilty of organ trafficking.

The court also ruled that his wife Beatrice, daughter Sonia and Obinna Obeta, a doctor involved in the case, were also found guilty.

According to the UK Guardian, Ekweremadu’s case brought about the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act.

The jury found that they conspired to bring the victim to London to exploit him for his kidney.

Last year, the former deputy senate president in the eighth national assembly, and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested and charged in court by the UK police for child organ harvesting.

According to the metropolitan police in a statement, the couple has been charged to court on Thursday following an investigation by the police’s specialist crime team.

In May 2022, the police launched an investigation after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation, the police added.

The statement: “Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.”

“Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today.”
