According to a report, only 58 female legislators have been elected out of 993 state houses of assembly seats across the country.

CivicHive disclosed this in a data report published on Wednesday.

2023 elections were held across 993 House of Assembly constituencies across the 36 states of the country by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The State House of Assembly (SHoA)  is a vital component of the country’s democracy and plays a critical role in lawmaking, representation, budget approval and oversights to engender development at the state level.

The 993 seats are a creation of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria to be filled by eligible candidates, including men and women fielded by their political parties for election into the state houses of assembly.

The report revealed that only 58 females won their elections into the House of Assembly in their respective states.

The figure represents only 5.84 per cent of the legislators elected at the state level at a time when Nigeria is advocating for women’s inclusion and participation in the political leadership of the country.

The analysis also showed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) have the highest number of elected state legislators with 534 seats, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed 353 seats followed by the Labour Party (LP) with 38 seats and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 32 seats.

Others include the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) with 21, Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 8 seats, Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 5 seats and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 1 seat.
