ONDO – The Ondo State House of Assembly has recently held a public hearing on a bill for a law to eliminate and prohibit all forms of Violence Against Persons in Private and Public life.
On Monday, 8th March 2021, the Ondo State House of Assembly held a-day public hearing on a bill for a law to eliminate violence in private and public life, prohibit all forms of violence against persons, and provide for maximum and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders and other related matters in the State.

The bill is divided into seven (7) sections which consist of the preliminary, sexual offences, the jurisdiction of the court, establishment of the sexual assault referral centres and shelters for victims of violence, service providers, establishment of Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence and the miscellaneous.
TECHNOCRAT MEDIA obtained a copy of the bill and in our bid to educate Nigerians and the residents of Ondo State on the important and critical things to know about the bill and has identified 20 important things to know about the proposed bill against violence and its penalties summarized as follows:
- Rape – conviction to term imprisonment not exceeding 5-years/ fine of N100,000.00 or both.
- Indecent assault – conviction and imprisonment of 5-years without any fine option.
- Abandonment of children and spouse – conviction to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 2-years or a fine of N100,000.00.
- Intimidation of any kind – conviction to a term of imprisonment 1year or a fine of N100,000.00.
- Stalking – conviction to a term of 2-years imprisonment or a fine of N200,000.00.
- Spousal battery – conviction to a term of 1-year imprisonment or to a fine of N100,000.00.
- Political violence – conviction to a term of 4-years imprisonment or a fine of N1,000,000.00.
- Incest – conviction to ten (10)-years imprisonment without any option of fine.
- Indecent exposure – conviction to 1-year imprisonment or to a fine of N300,000.00 or both.
- Attack with harmful substance – conviction to 20 years imprisonment without an option of fine.
- Prohibition of female genital mutilation – conviction to a term of 2-years imprisonment or to a fine of N100,000.00.
- Coercion – conviction to 5-years imprisonment or to a fine of N500,000.00.
- Wilfully placing a person in fear of physical injury – conviction to community service under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of Ondo State.
- Ejection from home without any lawful justification – conviction to 2-years imprisonment or to a fine of N300,000.00.
- Obstructing investigation – conviction to 3-years imprisonment or to a fine of N200,000.00.
- Emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse – conviction to a term of 6 months or to a fine of N100,000.00.
- Harmful traditional practices – conviction to 2-years imprisonment or to a fine of N500,000.00 or both.
- Trafficking – conviction to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine.
- Domestic violence – conviction to 1-year imprisonment.
- Deprivation of personal liberty – conviction to 1-year imprisonment or to a fine of 100,000.00 or both.
These and many more offences and penalties are being proposed by the Ondo State House of Assembly to be passed and signed into law in the State.
