Akure, Nigeria
The Ondo State Government has officially commissioned the Onyearugbulem-Irese Flyover in Akure, marking the completion of the state capital’s first flyover bridge after 34 months of construction.
The project was initiated in July 2023 by the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and later completed under the administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the flyover on Monday in Akure, describing the project as a major infrastructural intervention designed to reduce traffic congestion and boost commercial and industrial activities within the corridor.
Shettima praised the Ondo State Government for delivering the project, noting that strategic infrastructure development remains essential for sustainable growth and regional connectivity.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who hosted dignitaries, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, at the commissioning ceremony, described the flyover as a landmark achievement for Ondo State.
According to Aiyedatiwa, the project represents more than just physical infrastructure, emphasising that it was conceived to tackle long-standing traffic issues, improve road safety, and increase economic productivity in Akure.
He noted that the Onyearugbulem–Shagari and Akure–Benin Expressway intersection had historically been associated with frequent accidents, heavy traffic congestion, and delays affecting residents and businesses alike.
The governor added that the route serves as a strategic gateway to the South-West region and has, for years, experienced disruptions to economic activities due to persistent gridlock.
As part of the celebration, Aiyedatiwa announced that the flyover would be named after Afenifere National Leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, in honour of his 100th birthday, which was celebrated on Monday
