The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set dates for Akure North/Akure South and other vacant federal and state constituencies across the country to hold on February 26.
In a press statement on Friday, Festus Okoye said INEC has reviewed its preparations for the Area Council elections in the federal capital territory (FCT) and other outstanding elections.
He said: “Following the declaration of vacancies by the honourable speaker of the house of representative and that of some houses of assembly across the nation, the Commission has scheduled bye-elections for six constituencies in four states.”
The federal constituencies include; Akure North/ Akure South in Ondo State, Jos North/Bassa in Plateau State, and Ogoja/Yala in Cross Rivers state.
The state constituencies include; Akpabuyo in Cross Rivers state and Ngor/Okpala in Imo State respectively.
Mr Okoye noted “the bye-elections will hold on Saturday, February 26, 2022 immediately after the FCT Area Council elections. This will enable the Commission to clear most of the bye-elections, focus on the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections, and the ongoing preparations for the 2023 general election.”
“Political parties fielding candidates for the bye-elections must comply with the activities and timelines set out in the timetable and schedules of activities for the conduct of the bye-elections, and conduct transparent and valid direct or indirect primaries in accordance with the dictates of Section 86 and 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 (Amended).”, Mr Okoye added.
