Vehicles, shops, other valuables destroyed in Abuja riot

A riot broke out in a market at the Dei-Dei area of Kubwa axis in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, following an accident that caused the death of an unidentified lady.

A riot broke out in a market at the Dei-Dei area of Kubwa axis in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, following an accident that caused the death of an unidentified lady.

Although, it appears there are different versions of what led to the riot on Wednesday.

Some residents of the area said there was an accident involving a motorcycle and an articulated vehicle in the area.

According to residents, the death of the lady involved in the accident was said to have resulted in the chaos that followed.

While the riot was on, several persons were seen with what appeared to be dangerous materials, and the burning of shops and vehicles, as well as some motorcycles, was perpetrated.

The chaos caused vehicular traffic along Kubwa/Kaduna/Zaria expressway as pedestrians and residents in the area ran for their safety.

When contacted, Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Federal Capital Territory, said the Police and other security agents have deployed their men and officers to the scene to maintain law and order.

Operatives of the FCT fire service had arrived at the market, trying to control the inferno.
