The Federal Government has registered two new university academic unions to break the power of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and productivity, announced the development on Tuesday.

The unions include the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).

The minister said the two unions will exist in the country alongside ASUU.

ASUU had been on industrial action in the last seven months over the failure of the Federal Government to honour the 2009 agreement and unpaid allowances.
