Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has ordered the reduction of the tuition fee of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (A.A.U.A) as a way of easing the economic effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on Ondo States citizens.
Mr. Akeredolu made this directive barely a week after he met and promised the university management and students’ leadership that he would reduce the tuition.
In a statement issued by the institution’s acting Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa,on Thursday, the Acting Vice_Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige was directed to inform all the returning students of the institution about the reduction. it will take effect from the 2019/2020 academic session.
The statement read: “I write on the directive of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga E. IGE to inform all returning students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko that following an earlier appeal by students, and in view of the economic effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the country on parents and students, the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has directed that the University should consider a reduction in tuition fees in a way that quality education can still be sustained in the university.
As a follow up to the above, a meeting between the Governor, the university, and the student leaders was convened.
Consequently, the Visitor has approved the under listed reduction of tuition fees with effect from the 2019/2020 academic session, as recommended by Council.”
Details of the reduction are as follows:
Returning Students in the Faculty of Sciences had their fees reduced from N150,000 to N120,000. While the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences had theirs reduced from N150,000 to N120,000 also.
Faculty of Agriculture had theirs reduced from N150,000 to N100,000; Faculty of Arts fees has been reduced to N80,000 from N100,000.
Faculty of Education has also been reduced from N100,000 to N80,000. However, that of the Faculty of Law remains N150,000.
The students were, however, advised to take advantage of the reduced fees by paying their school fees and registering for their courses without further delay.
Recall that the tuition fees were reviewed and increased on assumption to office by Mr. Akeredolu in 2017. This development led to several protests by the students and parents.Mr. Akeredolu was of the view that the amount being paid by the students could not enable the provision of quality education for the students.
As the state’s gubernatorial election approaches co-aspirants were using the tuition fee controversy as a tool to campaign against Akeredolu’s second term bid.
