LAGOS – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a non-governmental organization has kicked against the federal government over the plan to rehabilitate Port Harcourt refinery at a cost of $1.5bn.
The NGO via its Twitter handle has urged the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to suspend the plan without wasting time pending till when an impact assessment of the impact of the proposed spending is going to have on critical sectors like education, health, clean water and safe roads is carried out and widely published for Nigerians.
The federal government at its weekly Federal Executive Council meeting last week had announced the plans to rehabilitate the Port Harcourt refinery at a cost of $1.5 billion.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva without mincing words told State House reporters in Abuja last week that the president had approved a sum of $1.5 billion for the rehabilitation of the refinery, to be executed in three phases of 18, 24 and 44 months.
SERAP in a number of different tweets said, “this proposed spending will mean less money for educating millions of out-of-school Nigerian children, providing access to clean water and healthcare for Nigerians including the elderly, or ensuring access to COVID-19 vaccines and providing poor Nigerians critical reliefs”.
