AKURE – The Association of resident doctors of UNIMEDTHC, Ondo state has resumed her suspended strike action today 5th of June, 2021, after the expiration of the extra 24hrs ultimatum given to the Ondo State Government to clear all her outstanding arrears of March, April and May salaries.
According to a statement by the Association stated they could no longer shoulder the burden of working under the terrible conditions they had found themselves in the past few months with the hope that the Ondo State Government would come through to provide succor to them by making their salaries available in full as and when due.
“It is rather unfortunate that there are myriads of problems in the health sector especially in the state of which if salaries were taken care off the other problems would have indirectly be sorted out.
They listed other pertinent issues to include; shortage of doctors which if salaries were being paid in full and when due, doctors would not leave in droves as well as those intending to pick up appointments with the hospital who could not do so because of poor remuneration.
The Association said “the situation is really sad and disheartening that where the services of seven to ten doctors are required, you find only one or two and in some cases none. This is a terrible trend and has led to the proliferation of quackery in the state as well as the unnecessary loss of many lives.
“With further delays in payment of the salaries and percentage salary payments, more and more doctors would leave the system and there is going to be great chaos in the health sector in the state.
“The other sad situation that has worsened the whole matter is the fact that there are many departments yet to be accredited and those that have been accredited are fast losing it because of shortage of required manpower and specialist in these departments.
“It is rather unfortunate that the health of the people has not been seen as a priority and the saddest part of it all is that the indigenes of Ondo state would be the ones to bear the brunt of this chaos in the health sector as many of them would be exposed to exploitation and mismanagement by quacks which could ultimately lead to death.
“We as an Association would want to reiterate that we are resuming our suspended strike as the condition of serving in the health sector in Ondo State is no more palatable and is even becoming dangerous to the well-being of our members.
“We hope the issues of salary are looked into and sorted out as soon as possible in the interest of the good people of Ondo State so that we don’t have to be going around this circle over again.
The doctors appealed to well-meaning citizens of the State and Nigerians, in general, to lend their voice to call on the State government to pay their salaries up to date to quickly prevent further needless loss of precious human lives and further exodus of doctors out of the state.
