Mike Ozekhome takes over Nnamdi Kanu’s case as court adjourns

The services of a senior advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome has been engaged by the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The services of a senior advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome has been engaged by the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Mr Ozekhome arrived at the federal high court in Abuja on Tuesday in the company of the lawyer who has been leading the team, Ifeanyi Ejiofor.
Mr Ejiofor confirmed to journalists at the premises of court on Tuesday.

The senior advocate of Nigeria, Mr Ozekhome also confirmed the development, said: “Yes, I’m now in the legal and that’s why you’re seeing me in court.”

There’s a high level of security presence at the court premises as all roads leading to the court have been blocked by the operatives of the Department of the State Services (DSS) to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

Mr Kanu who is facing trial bordering on treasonable felony arrived at the court in usual attire as security operatives have allegedly refused his pleas to change the cloth.

On Monday, the federal government filed eight fresh charges bordering on terrorism against the IPOB leader.

Labaran Mogaji, counsel to the federal government said the law allows for charges to be amended and refiled.

The IPOB leader, who was arrested and re-arraigned in October 2021 on a seven-count charge, is now to take his plea in response to a charge on 15 counts, including on terrorism.

Meanwhile, the court has adjourned till Wednesday, January 19.
