Richard Gingras, vice president of Google News is the keynote speaker for the maiden West Africa Journalism Innovation Conference (#WAJIC23).

The conference is being organised by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), to take place between July 24-26, 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital territory (FCT).

According to the organisation, Gingras lead other speakers to discuss the conference theme—“Accountability Journalism: nurturing innovation for sustainable future”.

Other speakers and panellists include David Adeleke, the Africa Editor at Rest of World; Jake Epelle, chief executive officer and founder of TAF Africa; Kunle Adebajo, head of investigations at HumAngle; and Richard Gevers, founder of Open Cities Lab.

Samson Itodo, executive director of Yiaga Africa; Shamima Muslim, founder and convener of the Alliance for Women in Media Africa; and Muheeb Saed, a journalist and civil society activist will also be on the panel of discussants.

“#WAJIC2023 will host over 300 journalists, media professionals, the academic community, policymakers, government institutions, and other relevant stakeholders across West Africa to discuss the state of accountability journalism in West Africa and how innovation is impacting its evolution, values and principles”.
