Abuja, Nigeria
The organised labour made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has declared a nationwide strike over a new minimum wage in the country.
According to the labour unions, the strike would commence on Monday, June 3rd, 2024 following the inability of the tripartite committee to agree on a new minimum wage.
President of the TUC, Festus Osifo, alongside the leadership of the NLC, announced the strike at a joint news conference in Abuja on Friday.
NLC and TUC explained that the decision followed the expiration of an earlier request to the federal government to conclude all negotiations for a new minimum wage before the end of May.
The organised labour had once pulled out of the negotiation and rejected two federal government offers, the latest being the offer to pay N60,000 as a minimum wage.
