Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to step down as Canada’s prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party.
He made the revelation on Monday evening.
BBC reports that his decision followed the growing pressure from within his party.
Trudeau has announced that he will resign, bringing an end to his nine-year tenure as leader.
The Canadian leader confirmed that he would remain in office until the Liberal Party selects a new leader, and that parliament would be prorogued, or suspended, until March 24.
“In the next election, this country deserves a true choice, and it has become clear to me that if I am embroiled in internal conflicts, I cannot be the best option,” he stated during a press conference on Monday.
Trudeau’s declining popularity among Canadians had increasingly become a hindrance to his party’s prospects ahead of federal elections later this year.
