The Oyo State Government has said that the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, will commence international flights by June 2026.
Prince Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated this in Ibadan, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The commissioner said effort are on to complete the international terminal which is currently at 15 per cent completion, is expected to be ready for international flights by June 2026.
Oyelade added that the government is making efforts to upgrade the airport to international standards.
According to the commissioner, the upgrade involves extending the runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres.
The runway will also be widened from 45 metres to 60 metres to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
In addition, the airfield lighting has been upgraded to CAT C, and firefighting response capabilities have been strengthened to enhance safety.
“Facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other essential agencies are also being put in place,” Oyelade noted.
However, he said local flight operations will resume by the end of this year.
He stated that the runway, apron, taxiway and blast pads are now 55 per cent complete.
According to him, these upgrades will allow local flights to resume once approved by the appropriate regulatory authorities.
Oyelade said the development aligns with the government’s vision to modernise the Ibadan airport.
“By improving our infrastructure, we enhance domestic travel and prepare for international operations,” he said.
On 18th September 2024, the upgrade of the airport was inaugurated.
In March 2025, the government announced a temporary shutdown of the airport to accelerate construction work.
