On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of army staff succeeding Attahiru Ibrahim who died on May 21, 2021 in a military plane crash at the International Airport in Kaduna.
The news of his announcement was made public by the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Who is Major General Farouk Yahaya?
Farouk Yahaya, born on January 5, 1966. Until his appointment, was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the counter terrorism counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East with the coded name – Operation HADIN KAI.
His academic qualifications
Major General Yahaya holds a bachelor degree of arts in history and a masters in international affairs and diplomacy.
His career and Promotions
He began his cadet training on September 27, 1985 and commissioned as regular combatant in September 22, 1990 and became a lieutenant on September 27, 1990.
Major General Farouk Yahaya is a member of 37 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defense Academy Kaduna.
He became a captain on September 27, 1994.
He rose to become a major on September 27, 1998.
Yahaya became a lieutenant conel on September 27, 2003 and conel on September 27, 2008.
He attained the rank of a brigadier general on September 27, 2013 and a major general on September 27, 2017.
He took over from Major General Olusegun Adeniyi, who was redeployed to the Nigerian Army Resource Centre as Senior Research Fellow.
He also served as the Commander of 4 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army.
His honors and awards
Major General Yahaya has been honored with awards such as forces service star, meritorious service star, distinguished service star, grand service star, passed staff course (dagger), and national defence course (Chile).
Others include, economic community of West African states monitoring group medal, command medal, field command medal, general operations medal, silver jubilee medal and golden jubilee medal.

He hails from Bodinga local government area of Sokoto State.

Major General Yahaya speaks English, Hausa, Arabic and Spanish.
He is married and blessed with four children. He enjoys reading, traveling, cracking jokes and listening to music.
