ABUJA – The Federal Government says all social media platforms must register
and obtain a license before they will be allowed to operate in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, stated
this in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the decision of the Federal
Executive Council, FEC, on the issue.
With particular reference to Twitter, he warned that Nigeria would
not, under any guise, allow infringement on her sovereignty and
corporate existence.
Alhaji Lai Muhammed said Twitter had approached the government for
talks, pointing however that the talks would strictly be under its
terms.
On the complaint that the ban on Twitter is an infringement on freedom
of speech, the Minister advised the complainants to turn to other
platforms in operation.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Mr. Niyi
Adebayo has presented to FEC the first indigenous GSM phone, which he
said was completely manufactured by the Modern Skills Training Centre
of the Industrial Training Fund, ITF.
