Abudullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa State says the belief that governors are against direct primaries is a false.
The governor made the statement at a town hall meeting on the electoral bill 2021 in Abuja organised by YIAGA Africa.
He said: “Going back to 2019, a lot of states determined whether to use direct or indirect.”
“Direct is similar to general elections. So, we said it should be left the for the people and party to determine.”
The governor mentioned how three options for primaries are stated in the APC constitution.
Mr Sule said, “For instance in APC, we have three options. The direct, concenus or indirect.”
He stressed further that to say the governors are the ones who are opposing direct primaries is a false.
He said, the Governors’ Forum is only asking for options.
“To say governors afraid of direct primaries is a lie. We only said we want options”.
“It depends, some states will adopt direct primaries if their governor is popular with the people. It depends on what a State wants.”
“Direct or indirect primaries should be imposed”, the governor added.
“For instance in Nasarawa, wether direct or indirect, we are ready.”, Mr Sule boasted.
