The Senate has passed the Nigeria Peace Corps Bill 2022.

The upper chamber read for the third time and passed the bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Peace Corps (SBs 271 and 375) on Tuesday during plenary.

The bill seeks to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps to develop, empower and provide gainful employment for the youths, and facilitate peace, volunteerism, community services, neighborhood watch, and nation-building.

The 8th Senate had passed the peace corps bill in 2017 after a long battle between the organisation and the security agencies of the federal government.

However, President Buhari withheld assent to the bill in February 2018.

As part of the reasons for his refusal, Mr Buhari cited security concerns and the financial burden of funding the organisation by the government.

He added that the peace corps would be a duplication of existing security agencies, saying the bill sought to empower the organisation to undertake activities currently being performed by extant security and law enforcement agencies.

The Senate also passed the “Nigerian Hunters Council (Establishment) Bill, 2022 (SB. 477).”

The bill seeks legal backing for the establishment of a council for hunters across the country.
