Microsoft and G42, a United Arab Emirates-based company have announced the plan to build a $1 billion geothermal data centre in Kenya.
Mobile World Live reports that the project is part of Microsoft’s plan to expand its cloud computing services across East Africa.
According to the report, G42 will lead the initial investment and handle the construction of the green data centre.
In addition to using geothermal energy, the companies stated the data centre will be designed with state-of-the-art water conservation technology.
The representatives of the companies and the President of Kenya, William Ruto, are expected to sign a letter of intent on 25th May when the president will be in the US. The centre will be completed and become operational within two years of the parties signing definitive agreements.
The partnership between Microsoft and G42 also includes an interest in research and development (R&D) into a local-language AI model, digital skills training and building an innovation laboratory.
Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft, stated the partnership is the single largest and broadest digital investment in the history of Kenya.
Last month, Microsoft announced a $1.5 billion investment for a minority stake in G42, an arrangement which gave it a seat on the AI company’s board.
