Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria
The Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti has granted human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi a N50 million bail after the inspector-general of police filed charges against him over allegations of cybercrime.
The prosecuting team had urged the court not to grant the bail of the human rights lawyer as requested by the defence team.
The presiding judge, Justice Babs O. Kuewumi, on Monday, December 9, 2024, disagreed with the prosecutor and ruled that Farotimi be released on bail.
The judge granted his release with conditions that included N50 million and a guarantor who holds a landed property worth the amount.
The case, with suit number FHC/AD/CR/104/2024, was filed by the Inspector-General of Police, alleging cybercrime activities linked to Farotimi.
The judge, however, adjourned the further proceedings of the case to January 29, 2025.
On Friday, 6th December, the Nigeria police approached the court with fresh charges against the human rights lawyer after he was arrested in Lagos and transferred to Ado-Ekiti over the alleged defamation of Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria.
