AfDB publishes the names of five candidates for the bank’s presidency

The African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Board of Governors’ steering committee on the election of the next president of the bank has published five names of the candidates jostling for the office.

The African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Board of Governors’ steering committee on the election of the next president of the bank has published five names of the candidates jostling for the office.

The five candidate’s names were published in a statement on the bank’s website on Friday. 

This followed the steering committee meeting on February 11 and 12, 2025 in Abidja.

“The Steering Committee of the Board of Governors on the Election of the President of the African Development Bank met on 11 and 12 February 2025 at the Bank Group’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire,” the statement reads in part. 

The Steering Committee, after examining the candidatures cleared the following list of candidates for the office of the President of the African Development Bank during the next election to be held on 29 May 2025.”

The candidates include Hott Amadou from Senegal; Dr Maimbo Samuel Munzele from Zambia; Tah Sidi Ould from Mauritania; Tolli Abbas Mahamat from Chad, and Tshabalala Bajabulile Swazi from South Africa.

Out of the five candidates, two are from Southern Africa with the other three from Western Africa, Northern Africa and Central Africa.

The outgoing two-term president Akinwumi Adesina is from Nigeria, Western Africa.
