The former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has lost his FIFA council re-election bid.
The former NFF boss lost the opportunity for re-election after he was unable to garner the required votes to clinch one of the six membership positions available for Africa on the council.
Pinnick lost in the election held during the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt.
The elected members are Faouzi Lekjaa of Morocco, Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania, Kanizat Ibrahim of Comoros, Souleiman Waberi of Djibouti, Hamidou Djibrilla of Niger, and Hani Abo Rida of Egypt.
Pinnick secured just one vote fewer than Yahya and Waberi, who earned the final two spots.
The FIFA Council serves as the main decision-making body of the federation between FIFA Congress sessions.
It consists of 37 members, all elected by the FIFA Congress for a renewable four-year term.
Pinnick is the third Nigerian to be elected to the FIFA Council, following Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu.
In March 2021, Pinnick was elected into the council in March 2021 at the 43rd CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco.
Between 2014 and 2022, he served as a two-term president of the NFF and was replaced by Ibrahim Gusau.
