Abuja, Nigeria
Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has criticised leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for endorsing President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.
Recall that Malami served as AGF under the Buhari-led APC administration from 2015 to 2023.
Malami said at a meeting organised by the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja on Sunday.
Prominent figures involved in forming a coalition for the 2027 elections—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State governor Chibuike Amaechi—were among the opposition leaders who attended the meeting.
The meeting was part of a series of consultations by opposition leaders aiming to build a coalition against Tinubu.
Malami who delivered a keynote address, faulted Tinubu’s policies, which he said are crippling the economy of northern Nigeria.
The former AGF added that rather than address the myriad challenges bedevilling the country, endorsing Tinubu for a second term in office has taken centre stage in the ruling party.
According to THISDAY, Malami said, “Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit and instead of addressing the serious issues of insecurity, economic hardship and rising poverty, it chose to focus on politics, endorsing President Bola Tinubu as sole candidate for the 2027 election that is still two years away.”
The former AGF called on stakeholders to unite to “reclaim” the country and build a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
On May 22, the APC convened a national summit in Abuja, attended by party stakeholders, including Tinubu and Shettima.
During the summit, the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) officially endorsed Tinubu as the APC’s sole candidate for the 2027 election.
