Abuja, Nigeria
Two members of the opposition parties in the House of Representatives have announced their defections and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The first among the defectors is Akingbaso Olanrewaju, who represents Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency from Ondo State.
Akingbaso was elected on the platform of the PDP and was the deputy governorship candidate of the party in the November 2024 election in the State.
The other is Okolie Lawrence, who represents Aniocha North/Aniocha South/Oshimili North/Oshimili South federal constituency of Delta state.
He was elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections.
Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, read their defection notices during Wednesday’s plenary in Abuja.
According to Akingbaso, in his letter to the house, he said his defection to the APC will “bring governance closer” to the people of his constituency.
He cited the ongoing crisis within the PDP as the reason for his defection, stating his desire to align with the APC’s ideology and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
