Tafa Balogun, a former inspector-general of police (IGP) who served between 2002 and 2005 during the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is dead.

According to TheCable, a source confirmed the development and said the former police boss died on Thursday evening.

Mr Balogun would have clocked 75 on August 18, had not been seen in public in recent times, and was said to have been sick.

According to the source, he reportedly died in a hospital in the Lekki area of Lagos state.

He, however, resigned his position following allegations of corruption leveled against him.

The former IGP was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of benefitting from corruption.

EFCC accused him of misappropriation of funds from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and was arraigned alongside seven companies in connection with the crime.

In January 2005, the EFCC linked bank accounts containing over N1 billion of alleged looted government monies.

During his trial, there were reports of him being brutalised, which resulted in his hospitalisation in July 2005.

Mr Balogun entered into a plea bargain with the anti-graft agency and was jailed for six months.

The court also ordered him to pay a fine of N4 million.
