The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it will declare lecture-free days across the country’s public universities following the half salaries being paid to its members by the Federal Government.

Moyosore Ajao, chairman of ASUU at the University of Ilorin, who spoke with TheCable on Sunday, confirmed the development.

The union had suspended its eight-month-old strike in October following a court order.

Weeks after the suspension of the industrial action, university lecturers alleged that the government paid them half their salaries contrary to the agreement on the matter.

Speaking on ASUU’s claim, Olajide Oshundun, head of press and public relations at the federal ministry of labour and employment, had said ASUU members were paid their October salary pro-rata and not half salary as reported.

“They were paid pro-rata according to the number of days they worked in October,” Oshundun had said, according to TheCable.

The union protested against the federal government’s decision on the salaries, while Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives assured that the issue was being resolved.

Mr Ajao said the planned lecture-free days won’t be on the same day for all institutions.

“It won’t be at the same time. Every branch will do its own on a different day. It’s just within the campus. It’s just making a statement,” he said.
