The Niger Republic military junta has appointed former minister of economy, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, as the new country’s prime minister.
The prime minister was appointed barely two weeks after the military organized a coup and ousted the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.
The coup plotter made the announcement of Zeine’s appointment on television on Monday night.
According to the country’s media reports, Zeine is a former minister of economy and finance in the cabinet of former President Mamadou Tandja, who was ousted in 2010.
The new prime minister currently works as an economist tat the African Development Bank in Chad.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had issued an ultimatum to the coup plotters to reinstate Bazoum which expired last weekend.
