TechnocratMedia, a media organisation in Nigeria working on social accountability, has organised a training session for the members of the House Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The convener of the session, Daisi Omokungbe explained that the training was necessary for the lawmakers to learn new lessons, approaches to holding the executive accountable for the goals they have subscribed to, and to make sure that new enabling laws are passed and budgets adopted to drive sustainable development goals implementation in Ondo State.

He said, according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, “The SDGs are an opportunity for parliamentarians to demonstrate their commitment to improving people’s lives and the health of the planet on which all human existence depends. More immediately, the SDGs are a robust framework around which parliaments can base their strategic plans and pursue their own oversight and accountability work”

The Committee was led by its chairman, Tomide Akinribido representing Ondo West Constituency I, who noted that training was organised for the members of his committee for the purpose of gaining working knowledge on sustainable development goals (SDGs) and how the best the house committee could explore it to fuel accountability and drive development in Ondo State.

You will recall that the ninth assembly was inaugurated on 3rd June in Akure. After the election of its principal officers, the assembly named the leadership and members of all house standing committees in order to pursue rigorous legislative business, governance and oversight functions.

The first session of the training with the topic: Introduction Sustainable Development Goals, was delivered by Jonathan Obatola who is the Executive Director, The PaceSetters.

The second session titled: Exploring Sustainable Development Goals by the Legislature delivered by Daisi Omokungbe, Chief Executive Officer, TechnocratMedia Nigeria.

The lawmakers could not hide their joy about the training which has exposed them to new areas of where their work on lawmaking, budgeting, oversight and constituents’ inclusion in government activities and projects.

One of the committee members, Sunday Olajide who is also the chairman of the house committee on finance and appropriation, remarked that the training was highly expositionary and promised to use the knowledge gained to amplify SDG implementation in the state.

Also, Akintomide Akinrogunde representing Okitipupa constituency I, shared his experience having worked in the health sector pointed that there was a need for a stakeholders’ summit in the state towards developing a state plan of implementation for SDGs.

Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi who gave the vote of thanks praised the convener of the training, speakers, and others who worked to make it successful. He expressed no doubt that the committee would make use of the new knowledge to guide and monitor Ondo State activities on the implementation of the SDGs.

The “Agenda 2030” for sustainable development is a ground-breaking global commitment to end poverty and set the world on a sustainable path to inclusive development. It was endorsed by government leaders at a United Nations summit in September 2015. A set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 actionable targets lies at the core of this ambitious agenda being localized in Ondo
