COVID-19: American Airlines to lay off 19,000 workers unless Congress offers aid

American Airlines has revealed that it will lay off 19,000 workers once the federal payroll aid elapses in October, only if the government offers an extension of the aid.
American Airlines is the world’s largest airline, which had about 133,000 employees earlier this year.
The management through a letter said it will need to reduce the number of employees by at least 40,000 due to reduce in demands as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.
“Based on current demand levels, we at American now plan to fly less than 50% of our airline in the fourth quarter, with long-haul international particularly reduced to only 25% of 2019 levels.
“Approximately 19,000 of our team members will be involuntarily furloughed or separated from the company on October 1,” They said.
However, the company said the job losses could be stopped only if the government extends the aid being given to airlines struggling to pay their staff due to the coronavirus outbreak.
