The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has told protesting students that the Federal Government has started considering full reopening of schools across the country.
According to Punchng, Mr.Nwajiuba made this disclosure during the Presidential Task Force press briefing on COVID-19  in Abuja on Monday.
Mr. Nwajiuba said though the federal government has not fixed a date for schools’ full resumption yet, he urged protesting students to remain calm and be patient with the federal government. He added that the government had been meeting with stakeholders, and some of them have shown their readiness to resume fully.
“I urge our students who have actually exercised a lot of patience along with their parents … I urge you to bear with us a little bit more. The rioting needs to stop; there is nothing to riot about. We don’t want to bandy around dates, we remain positive,” he said.
The Minister also disclosed that he and the Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, had met with some tertiary education stakeholders on Monday as regards the resumption issue.
He said about 78 privately-owned universities had said they are ready for resumption while the response from government-owned universities was still “50-50.”
He said that after aggregating opinions the PTF would review the situation at hand and then make a final pronouncement.
It would be recalled that secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the country were earlier shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in March this year.
