2023 elections under risk as hoodlums set INEC Office ablazed

Technocrat Media Nigeria

UYO – The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Essien Udim local government area in Akwa-Ibom has been set ablazed by hoodlums.

Festus Okoye in a statement on Sunday said the incident happened at the early hours of today.

“He said the destruction on the building and properties therein was extensive”.

“The items destroyed include 345 ballot boxes, 135 voting cubicles, megaphones, water tanks and office furniture”.

Mr. Okoye noted that the recent attacks on INEC facilities after the Commission has taken inventory of electoral materials nationwide in readiness for the 2023 general election was worrisome.

He added that if unchecked, the attacks may constitute a setback on the Commission’s preparations, including the ongoing conversion of voting points to polling units, and the forthcoming continuous registration of voters exercise and the conduct of polls.
