DCP Abba Kyari, a suspended deputy commissioner of police bail application has been rejected by a federal high court sitting in Abuja.

Mr Kyari alongside seven others who were members of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) was on March 7 arraigned before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Others are Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne — two alleged drug traffickers who were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/57/2022, NDLEA accused Mr Kyari and others of conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in cocaine worth 17.55 kilograms.

Upon appearance in court, Mr Kyari and four other defendants pleaded not guilty as the sixth and seventh defendants pleaded guilty and asked the court to “have mercy” on them.

The counsels to the defendants had applied for their clients’ bails.

However, Joseph Sunday, prosecution counsel, opposed the bail applications, said all the conditions for which the defendants should not be granted bail are inherent in the case.

Emeka Nwite, the trial judge ruled in favour of the prosecution counsel that the defendants are likely to interfere and undermine the trial.

Justice Nwite refused the bail application and ordered an accelerated trial of the defendants.

Their bail applications were refused and the Judge ordered their remand in Kuje, Suleja Correctional Centres till 28th April.
