William Ruto has been sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president.

The chief of justice of Kenya, Martha Koome performed the ceremony on Tuesday at Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani Stadium.

At the inauguration, Mr Ruto swore an oath of allegiance and also took another oath for the execution of the functions of the office of the president.

He was declared winner of the Kenya’s presidential election by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC), after defeating ex-prime minister Raila Odinga on August 15.

Mr Ruto polled 50.49 per cent of the votes to defeat Mr Odinga who polled 48.85 per cent of the votes.

The new Kenyan president was born on 21 December 1966 in Kamagut, Kenya.

He served the country as a deputy president between 2013 to 2022.  Between 2008 and 2010, he was the minister of agriculture as well as the minister of higher education.

He was elected as a member of parliament for Eldoret North constituency between 1999 to 2007.
