Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state, says the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu, received N1 billion from Lagos paid to him by a presidential hopeful.

Mr Wike made the allegation on Friday during a media chat in Port Harcourt.

The Rivers governor said PDP national chairman cannot deny that he received the money but refused to remit the sum to the accounts of the party.

“Ayu is very corrupt. I’m totally informed. Ayu has the opportunity to challenge me, I will name,” he said.

“Some of the governors can tell you. Will he deny the fact that he didn’t collect N1 billion from Lagos? Let him deny it, I will tell him who gave him the money, not from the Lagos state government, the money was given to him in Lagos.

“He met one of the presidential candidates and told him that he’s not sure these governors may want to sponsor the party.

“That money did not enter into the account of PDP, but we are not attacking Ayu on that basis.”

Mr Wike had contested against the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who won the presidential primaries of the party in May.

Aftermath of the primary election, the governor with the support of some other governors on the platform of the PDP and some other party leaders from the south had been at loggerhead with the national chairman, asking for his resignation.

The call for his resignation is to allow a southern man to replace Mr Ayu, saying the north cannot hold the presidential ticket and at the same time retains the national chairmanship position of the party.

Earlier in the week, Wike and his allies announced their withdrawal from the 2023 campaign council constituted by the NWC of the PDP.
