2023: Data on voters’ turnout for presidential elections since 1999 shows steady decline

The 2023 presidential election has recorded the lowest turnout of voters since 1999 after Nigeria’s return to democracy.

The 2023 presidential election has recorded the lowest turnout of voters since 1999 after Nigeria’s return to democracy.

Data from announced results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shows that only about 24.9 million voters came out to vote.

This represents 26.72% out of the total 93.47 million registered voters who voted in the just concluded February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections.

In 2019, the turnout was 34.74 per cent, compared to the just concluded election showing a decline of 8.03 per cent.

The 2015 election data by INEC shows that the turnout was 44% out of 68.8 million registered voters and 54 per cent of the 73.5 million registered voters in the 2011 presidential elections.

Also, in 2007, voter turnout was 58 per cent of the 61.6 million registered voters and the presidential election in 2003 recorded a 69 per cent turnout of voters respectively.

Lastly, the 1999 presidential election recorded a 52 per cent turnout of voters from 57.9 million voters that registered to vote in the election.
