Ikechukwu Emetu, 38, a petrochemical engineer is the deputy governor of Abia state inaugurated on May 29, 2023, on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).

Early life, education and career

Ikechukwu Emetu was born on March 24, 1985, and hails from Ohafia in Ohafia’s south local government area of Abia state. He is a petrochemical engineer and attended the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), according to Wikipedia

Emetu ran for Ohafia’s south seat in the Abia State House of Assembly in 2019 on the platform of the ADP but came forth. The seat was won by the then-candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ifenyi Francis Uchendu.

His principal, Alex Otti, governor of Abia state nominated Emetu as his running mate in August 2022.

According to Otti, he got attracted to Emetu because of his antecedent as a philanthropist and satisfied his desire for a young citizen as his deputy.

Alex Otti as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he was picked because of his “youth, his outstanding community development service and humanitarian gestures”.

He received his certificate of return on 29 March 2023 and was sworn in as the deputy governor of Abia on 29 May 2023.

His emergence as a deputy governor could be one of the testaments of how the NotTooYoungToRun Act is influencing youth participation in Nigeria’s politics, governance and decision-making process.
