Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the flooding which affected the commission’s state headquarters in Benin won’t stop the Edo State governorship election.
Yakubu stated this during his to INEC’s Edo State on Wednesday to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by recent flooding at the state headquarters.
A statement on the commission’s official X handle said his visit was in the lead-up to the Edo State governorship election and the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
“Prof. Yakubu assessed the impact of the flood on the commission’s materials and equipment, ensuring that preparations for the upcoming election remain on track. Despite the significant damage, the Honorable Chairman assured that the flood would not impede the election process come September 21, 2024,” the statement reads
“Prof. Mahmood said the flood will not affect the election. We are taking all necessary steps to replace the materials and equipment lost during the flood.
“The INEC Chairman’s visit underscores the commission’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process in Edo State, despite the challenges posed by natural disasters.
The statement said despite the flood last Friday, the commission took proactive steps to replace the materials (IVED machines) to facilitate the ongoing CVR exercise in all registration areas in Edo State before the governorship election in September 2024.
Recall that INEC has resumed Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Edo and Ondo States ahead of the governorship elections in the two States.
According to INEC, the CVR in Edo and Ondo States will occur simultaneously from Monday 27th May 2024 to Wednesday 5th June 2024 from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm daily including the weekend.
