Over 1200 residents of the Dapa community in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have no access to clean water.
The community is about 30 kilometres away from Kwali town in the FCT and is also without motorable roads as vehicles and motorcycles cannot access the community during the rainy sessions.
According to Tracka, the ‘cleanest’ water the people of the community drink and consume even during the rainy season is dirty—erosion-like water.
Tracka is a public service delivery project by BudgIT, that exposed the deplorable condition of water supply in the community and appealed to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to take action in addressing the issue.
The government is yet to issue any official response to the matter.
This development is coming two days after the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), says the number of people without reliable access to clean water has risen dramatically to millions in the Horn of Africa.
According to MAWA Foundation, Mr. Usman Mohammed, a community champion in the area said the inhabitants both adults and children usually trek about five kilometres in search of water.
He, however, disclosed that about five other villages in FCT depend on the dirty water as their only source of drinking, a situation he described as a threat to their livelihood.
Last year, 60 persons died and 698 persons were infected by the Cholera outbreak in the FCT.
Cholera is endemic and seasonal in Nigeria—where only 14% of over 200 million population have access to clean water.
