The parent company of Facebook, Meta, said it’s launching a new app — called Threads.

The platform which is to rival Twitter will be unveiled on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

Meta announced the development months after its chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, chairman of Twitter agreed to a cage fight.

According to the company, ‘Threads’ is now available for pre-order on the Apple Store, and is expected to be linked to Instagram.

Meta describes the new product as a “text-based conversation app”.

“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what will be trending tomorrow,” the description of the app says On Apple Store.

Threads is close to being a replica of Elon Musk’s popular micro-blogging platform, Twitter, and the launch is coming when Twitter is facing several issues with aggrieved users following new features introduced by Musk.

Last week, Musk introduced a restriction on the number of posts users can read daily on Twitter, a decision that made some Nigerians dump the platform for Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform.

According to Musk, the new change was a temporary measure to combat data scraping and system manipulation by third-party platforms.

He said verified users will have access to 6,000 posts daily, while unverified and new users will be allowed to read 600 and 300 posts, respectively.

Since Musk acquired Twitter last year, he has introduced several changes that have come as unpalatable to some users.

“Thank goodness they’re so sanely run”, Musk said when reacting to the planned launch of Threads by Meta.
