Abuja, Nigeria
The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Ola Olukoyede as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The upper chamber of the National Assembly also confirmed Muhammad Hammajoda as the secretary of the commission.
Last week, President Tinubu nominated both men and asked the Senate to screen and confirm their appointments
The red chamber screened and confirmed their appointment on Wednesday in Abuja.
The leadership pf EFCC has experienced a major shakeup in the last few months following the assumption of office by the President on May 29, 2023.
Two weeks after his inauguration, Tinubu announced the suspension of the chairman of the anti-graft agency, Abdulrasheed Bawa indefinitely.
According to sources in the presidency, his suspension was “to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office”. The action followed “weighty” allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
Since Bawa’s suspension, he has been in the custody of the Department of State Security Service (DSS).
The President subsequently directed the director of operations at the commission, Abdulkarim Chukkol to step into office in acting capacity.
