The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed the bill seeking to rename the State’s First Technical University to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.
The bill was passed the bill during the plenary on Wednesday by the House after Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, chairperson of the committee on tertiary institutions presented the committee’s report.
The bill which seek to rename the state-woned First Technical University, Ibadan to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University was passed after it was sealed through the third reading.
Speaking on the importance of the passage of the bill, Fowokanmi, said that the law will enable the institution to enjoy benefits enjoyed by other state-owned institutions.
Fowokanmi noted that the institution is being financed from scholarship payments by the local governments in the state and its internally generated revenue.
The committee chair further explained that the renaming of the institution to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, has authenticated that the institution is one of the state-owned tertiary institutions and will have access to subvention like every other institution in the state.
The lawmaker also said the move will allow the institution to enrol students through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and also bring down the tuition fee, which will invariably allow more admission seekers and Indigenous students to enrol.
The governor, Seyi Makinde had sought the repealing of the law establishing the institution by the House of Assembly to reflect a change of name to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan.
Late former governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration established the First Technical University, Ibadan in 2017.
